How to Approach Japanese Girls (and Guys)

For many people, approaching someone they find attractive can be a nerve-racking experience.

This is especially true when trying to meet Japanese girls (and even guys), because most Japanese people are very shy.

There seems to be this idea that picking up people requires a special skill, but in reality there are just three easy things to remember when meeting Japanese girls and guys.

Take It Easy

Japanese people are generally quite shy and conservative when it comes to romantic relationships. Coming on strong and aggressive will immediately create an uncomfortable situation and scare them away. It’s important to be relaxed and friendly.
Another thing to consider is touch. In many countries, touch is a way to feel close to someone and show them you are interested (i.e. touching someone’s hand or arm). In Japan, touch is less common between people and should be done carefully.

Join Different Groups

Common pick up spots like clubs and bars will usually result as awkward situations, because girls will have their guards up. Meet people with common interests by joining groups or clubs. This is by far the easiest way to approach others in a relaxed atmosphere. There is no need to think of a clever pick up line when there is a common interest to discuss.
A great way to meet Japanese people and make them feel comfortable is by trying out a language exchange. Ask for Japanese help and practice phrases with native speakers.

Everyone Loves Happy People

People are naturally drawn to happy people, and Japanese people are no exception. Just take a look at popular Japanese characters, celebrities and comedies, the majority of them will have very positive happy personalities. A happy and positive person will instantly make others feel at ease and open them up to new relationships.

When approaching Japanese guys and girls, always be open and positive. Find common ground and share interests in a casual manner. Avoid being aggressive and slowly work towards a romantic relationship.
