Japanese Sleeping on The Job: Some Japanese Sleep Vocabulary
Misleading articles suck right? I've been recently running across some misleading articles while doing some research. And it really isn't good when the first page of Google shows a misleading article. When searching for the culture of Japanese sleeping at work, I ran across this article as the Google Front Page: "In some industries napping at work is considered not only acceptable but even desirable. Inemuri (居眠り) is the practice of ‘sleeping while present’ and has long been part of Japanese work culture, proof as it is that the sleeper spends so much time at the office that he or she is unable to sleep at home." Okay, so that's not exactly right. Inemuri isn't a good thing in Japan. It's more like dozing off and not being productive. And this lack of understand has even been reproduced to Wikipedia. However, sleeping at work is not a problem and is a positive sign as in : Japanese Firms Encourage Workers to Sleep on the Job. But this isn't Inemuri (居眠り), it's Hirune (昼寝). So let's get this terminology right!
Taking a nap at your desk to recharge is perfectly acceptable and even encouraged
Dozing off in front of a client? That's not acceptable behavior!
Being in Japan the first time, I was actually worried when I saw someone take a nap at work. I was like trying to cover for her (*wink* I won't tell anyone) because if you just put your head down and sleep at my old jobs, you could get fired. Of course, times have changed with companies like Google offering awesome nap pods. And actually, taking a nap at work is very refreshing. I'm a huge advocate of it. If you're in a job that requires creativity at all, you definitely cannot work while tired. This is one aspect of learning Japanese work culture I was happy about.
Taking a siesta or lunch nap can spark your creativity!
Make sure you're not too sleepy while driving, it's very dangerous
Word | Romaji | Definition |
---|---|---|
居眠り | inemuri | dozing off |
昼寝 | hirune | afternoon nap |
睡眠 | suimin | sleep (noun) |
寝坊 | nebou | oversleeping (late for work) |
一眠り | hitonemuri | nap (positive sense) |
冬眠 | toumin | hibernation |
二度寝 | nidone | going back to sleep |
Cool little makeshift invention to nap comfortably. Getting proper naps is a good thing.
Sleeping on the toilet is not good and weird! Save this for the clubs rather than workplace.
So let's avoid 居眠り, but if you're tired, feel free to take a short 昼寝, it'll make you feel a lot better!
