How Uniqlo Has Dominated A Difficult Industry

The Unique World of Uniqlo
Do you Uniqlo? Uniqlo is a way of life, or at least my way of life. For those who don’t know, Uniqlo is the largest clothing retailer in Japan, and has thousands of stores operating in 16 countries worldwide. They are known for the inexpensive, yet high quality and everlasting clothes, while offering trend-starting styles to timeless basics.
For me, it always starts out with a compliment.
“You look nice today!”, a friend or someone would say to me. “Of course I do. I’m wearing Uniqlo.” I think to myself, but just thank them instead.
“Touch it!” I would tell my friends, whether I’m wearing Uniqlo’s ultra light jacket, or a basic turtleneck. And at first, some people might be a little reluctant to touch my clothes, but every time they do, every person is surprised at how soft the material is.
All of their clothes have been comfortable for me, from how it fits, to how it feels, to how it looks. Plus, it lasts forever - I’ve had my ultra light jacket for about 6 years now, and there are no rips, no tears - just comfort. At college, I talk about Uniqlo so much, that people got annoyed with me - until they all bought something from there and now they’re all frequent Uniqloers. If this isn’t already convincing you to give Uniqlo a try, let me give you more reasons why you will become obsessed.
Functionality
You can get the most stylish clothes on the market, but if it doesn’t do the job, then is it really worth it? While obviously Uniqlo offers hip, trendy styles, it also offers functionality in many forms that other retailers don’t. For example, HEATTECH is one of their best selling collections, and in their words:
“Functional HEATTECH innerwear is all you need to stay warm. The moisture-wicking fabric retains heat and also features anti-odor properties to keep you feeling fresh even when you sweat. Camellia oil moisturizer adds comfort for dry skin.”
And seriously, these things are puzzlingly warm. How do you expect a thin, long sleeved t-shirt to keep you warm in the winter? I don’t know, but it must be either magic or Uniqlo.
And for the summers, they offer their AIRism collection, and in their words it claims to:- 1. Absorbs and quickly evaporates perspiration.
- 2. Ultra-fine fibers feel soft and smooth.
- 3. Anti-odor properties.
- 4. Cool to the touch.
- 5. Stretches for comfort.
If you own one, you can really tell the difference between an AIRism tank top, to a regular cotton tank. So pretty much, for whatever time of the year, they have clothes to help you get through all this crazy weather.
Another thing I love from them, and this is for the ladies, is their bra-top products - shirts, camis, tanks, and dresses with a built in bra. One of my favorite dresses for example is this one below; it comes with a convenient and actually-effective bra top, and in the morning, all you do is slip this on, and for the rest of the day everybody will be complimenting you on how dressed up you look, even though you hardly put in any effort.
And one more thing for the ladies - Uniqlo is really good at giving you pockets. It might not be a concern for guys, but many clothes for women don’t have pockets, unfortunately, which can get irritating when you have nothing to carry except your phone and keys. Many of their bottoms offer some sort of pockets, and sometimes the pockets are hidden so well that other people don’t even realize that you have them. Now you don’t have to carry a whole purse just to hold your phone and chapstick because now it’s all in your pants.
Collaboration
A cool thing about Uniqlo is that it frequently collaborates with artists, both famous and not much so, and other companies, to offer unique designs. Some famous artists and brands they have collaborated with includes Pharrell Williams, Liberty London, and Disney, while they’ve also collaborated with emerging new artists. This is great for both Uniqlo and the collaborators, as the artists and companies are able to promote themselves through Uniqlo, and Uniqlo is able to offer exclusive designs.
Collaborating with SPRZ NY, they have created t-shirts and other clothing inspired by artists including Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring.
Social Responsibility
Uniqlo is committed to change the world for better. From refugees and victims of disasters, to those with special needs and underprivileged children, Uniqlo is there to help.
They’ve donated millions of clothes and held events in various communities, while committing to give back to their workers and employees. The impact they’ve made to the world is inspiring, and for more information about what they do, check out their website
New Styles EVERY WEEK
That’s right. EVERY. WEEK. Which is why I can’t get enough of Uniqlo, because they keep on restocking with new stuff. Plus, this also means that they will put new items on sale every week. So if you don’t find anything you like, you can just come back the next week!
