Cheating, Affairs, Drama!

A

ffairs everywhere! This show got really good ratings so I guess it appealed to a large popuation.

I Wonder What People Really Think

Like watching Desperate Housewives, 90210, or various other American TV shows; you would think that everyone cheats. This is what it feels like watching Hirugao. I have a group of friends that might act like this (to a lesser extent) and a group of friends who are disgusted by these types of activities. I'm not sure which faction represents the majority of people or if it's a split, but at least this drama is interesting.

Hirugao Sawa mother and husband

Sawa's married life is difficult being in small apartment with her Mother-in-law.

The Plot

This plot is summed up simply as: affairs everywhere!. One day, Sawa decides to steal some lipstick at the supermarket where she works. The next thing you know, she is having an affair! The affair is egged on by Rikako, who moved in next to Sawa, and is sleeping around with many men. Rikako goes by the online nickname, "Hirugao," which is an old Japanese drama about a cheating housewife.

Sawa is an innocent girl who just falls in love with another man. She plays out to be somewhat of a victim of her sexless marriage and overbearing Mother-in-law. Rikako's husband is wealthier and they have two lovely daughters together. However, she plays herself to be a victim of her husband's disrespect and her boredom as a housewife. This drama is drama!

Hirugao Sawa and Yuichi

Sawa immediately falls for a school teacher, Kitano Yuichi

Final Thoughts

Hirugao Rikako and her husband

Rikako's husband is completely oblivious to his wife's many afternoon affairs

I really don't know what to think about this drama. I really didn't think I'd watch it until the end but I was hooked enough to want to know what happens. It's like those unrealistic American soap operas that have crazy things happen and for some reason, you just keep watching.

I do feel like this drama glamorized affairs quite a bit. Both women seem to be happier in their affairs and it seems like a shame they had to be with their husbands.

But it's confusing because there is a lot of dialogue that seems to say that affairs are wrong and nothing good can ever come out of them. Rikako and Sawa both seem to know they will have to atone for their sins and that is the nature of affairs. I would like to point out that this show makes the women look pretty bad, with the husbands being hard-working victims.

Hirugao teacher couple

The wife begins to suspect her husband is having an affair.

I find it hard to believe that any marriage is perfect and any couple is completely happy. Relationships are difficult as is life. Is anyone completely happy all the time? So how can a couple be happy? Both life and relationship takes work. You have to go through a lot of challenges that you might not be able to overcome. The couples in Hirugao are faced with problems which they couldn't overcome. Their affairs, although good at first, will inevitably also face similar problems. I don't want to say it's right or wrong, it's just not necessarily the solution to an unhappy marriage.
