3 Unique Places to Sleep in Japan

Japan is one of those countries that’s filled with all sorts of unusual experiences that you just can’t experience anywhere else. From giant moving robots to average days in Tokyo where cosplayers walk around the city dressed in full costume, the fun continues on with sleeping accommodations.

More than just a room with a bed, there are many different ways to catch a night’s rest and still experience something uniquely Japanese.

Capsule Hotels

Capsule hotels are now synonymous with Japanese culture and they are a highlight for many travellers in need of a place to stay that’s quick and cheap. One “capsule room” is essentially a pod that fits one person comfortably. Some will just be standard beds, while others may have mood lighting and ambient sounds to help you sleep soundly. Depending on which capsule hotel you choose, the prices vary anywhere from $15 to $40 per night. Many also offer cheaper rates for longer stays.

Manga Cafe

Tokyo Anime Center DisplayA manga cafe is a popular choice for overnight or even long-term stays. While a manga cafe is very much like a regular internet cafe, Japan takes them to a new level by offering private spaces with very comfortable reclining chairs or beds and amenities that include toilets, showers, kitchens and all the anime/manga you could possibly want.
Manga cafes will offer rates by the hour or by the day. They range anywhere from $3 to $5 per hour or $15 to $25 per day (these prices often include free use of the snack area, toilets and anime/manga libraries.

Themed Hotel Rooms

Tokyo Anime Center DisplayFor a truly fun experience, there is always the option for an anime-themed room in a swanky hotel. Many 3+ star hotels have a special room that’s completely designed and decorated on a particular anime or otaku theme. You can stay in a large Hello Kitty room, a One Piece room outfitted with all of the characters on the walls and bedding, or spend a night playing with toys in a special train room (complete with a working train set that travels around the bedroom.
Themed hotel rooms will vary like regular hotel rooms, but the experience is one that can’t be beat!
